Another Hunter 36 Now Available in Long Beach!

Due to the popularity of the Hunter 36 since it's arrival in Long Beach earlier this year, we have added a second Hunter 36, "Perfect Partner", to the Harborlight Yacht Club rental fleet. This 2008 model is identical to "Changes in Latitudes", as we purchased both boats at the same time. Perfect for trips of any length to Catalina and beyond, the Hunter 36 boasts a spacious interior with fully equipped galley, a roller furling mainsail, and a bimini providing shade over the cockpit. The Hunter 36 has been the most popular boat in Long Beach so far this year, so we are pleased to bring a second one into the fleet before the end of the high season. Check out photos below:

Need to Get Certified?

The Hunter 36 requires either the US SAILING Bareboat Cruising Certification (Step 3 in the US SAILING Keelboat Certification System), ASA 104 (Bareboat Chartering), or prior experience on monohulls 36'-42' in length. If you are interested in getting certified, please refer to our schedule of upcoming Bareboat Cruising courses below (Basic Keelboat & Basic Cruising are prequisites to enroll in the course):

We’ve Moved! New HIYC Office Location

Harbor Island Yacht Club in San Diego is pleased to announce that we have moved our office to the first floor of the Marina Cortez building, into the old H&S Yacht Sales office - that means no more stairs! We feel that this will be a huge improvement from our old location upstairs, but we're still getting settled, so please excuse the mess for the time being! The entrance to our new office is located on the first floor behind the sailboats on display in front of the Marina Cortez building (same address - 1880 Harbor Island Dr, San Diego, CA 92101). We have a new classroom already set up for our students this weekend and look forward to making additional improvements over the next few weeks. We're already enjoying the nice ocean breeze coming through - it's much cooler down here!

Capri 22 Racing Clinic Schedule

It's that time of year again! Tuesday Night Capri 22 Racing season in San Diego is in full swing. Don't know how to race? Join us at Harbor Island Yacht Club on the Sunday prior to each race series this season and for the following 3-race series to learn the basics of sailboat racing with our Introduction to Racing Clinic - perfect for sailors new to racing or for those looking to brush up on their racing skills and knowledge. Racing rules, boat handling, sail trim, and other related topics are covered in this 4 session clinic.

On Sunday from 3:00pm - 5:30pm we will hold a brief classroom session to cover the racing rules of sailing. Then during all 3 races of the following 3-race series from 5:00pm - 7:30pm each Tuesday, we will send you out on one of our Capri 22's with an experienced instructor on board to coach you through the races and teach you all of the on-the-water basics of sailboat racing. You will gain all the practice you need to start racing on your own! We will assign a maximum of 3 students per boat for each race.

We couldn't have asked for a better day on San Diego Bay for the 3rd Annual Opening Day Regatta this past Sunday, April 5th. A total of 9 teams competed in a fun-filled race on the bay with plenty of wind and sunshine throughout the afternoon. Here are the race results along with photos from the event:

2009 Red Bull Air Race World Championship in San Diego: May 9th & 10th, 2009

In close partnership with the city, the San Diego International Sports Council and the Port of San Diego, the Red Bull Air Race World Series will make its second stop of the 2009 season on Saturday, May 9th and Sunday, May 10th in San Diego and will race right downtown on the Big Bay against the beautiful backdrop of the city. This is the second time the race will be held in San Diego.

The Red Bull Air Race will take place over the bay between the Embarcadero Marina parks and Coronado on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10. There will be two main ticketed viewing areas - one each in Embarcadero Marina Park North and Embarcadero Marina Park South - with all necessary amenities and services.

OR, you can catch all of the action from the water on one of the HIYC club boats! Just give us a call to reserve your boat ahead of time - last year we rented just about every boat in the fleet for this event.

3rd Annual HIYC Opening Day Sailing Regatta Scheduled for Sunday, April 5, 2009

Harbor Island Yacht Club in San Diego will be holding its 3rd Annual Opening Day Sailing Regatta for both members and guests on Sunday, April 5, 2009. For experienced sailors and novices alike, this opportunity to enjoy a day of sailboat racing on San Diego Bay is a truly unique experience not available in many places.

For this event, both members and non-members of Harbor Yacht Clubs may sign up as individuals, small groups of 2-5 people, or entire teams of 6 people. Each team for the regatta (aka sailboat race) will have a maximum of 6 members, so HIYC will be pairing up participants that sign up individually or in small groups. One of HIYC's friendly, experienced US Coast Guard licensed captains will be aboard each team's boat to coach them through the race. So whether or not you have sailing experience, you will be given the opportunity to participate as a crew member or simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the race on San Diego Bay!

Of course, if you are a sailor with prior racing experience, you may skipper your own boat. Just let HIYC know if you wish to do so when you register.

Hunter 36 "Changes in Latitudes" Available in Long Beach as of Saturday, March 7, 2009

To close the gap between the Beneteau 31 and the Catalina 42 Mk II, HYC is relocating one of the 2008 Hunter 36's, "Changes in Latitudes," to the Harborlight Yacht Club in Long Beach. This will be the only monohull sailboat available in Long Beach with a bimini, which will prove to be a useful amenity for long sunny weekends in Catalina Island over the summer. The Hunter 36 will be available for rent in Long beach as of Saturday, March 7, 2009.

San Diego Lagoon 380 Catamaran "Changing Channels" Headed Back to Long Beach for Summer

Due to the high demand for Lagoon 380 catamarans out of Harborlight Yacht Club in Long Beach to sail to Catalina Island this summer, "Changing Channels" will return to Long Beach as of Monday, June 22, 2009.

A number of HYC members have taken advantage of the single day Cruising Catamaran Instruction and have already become qualified to sail the Lagoon 380's before the high season begins.

The 8-hour Cruising Catamaran Instruction is offered privately for a maximum of 2 students at a time. The Members Only section of the HYC website has been a useful networking tool for members looking to split charter and instruction costs for the Lagoon 380.

Brand New Beneteau 31's Arrive in Long Beach

The 2 brand new Beneteau 31's finally arrived at Harborlight Yacht Club in Long Beach on the 3rd of July - just in time for the holiday weekend! Ever since the arrival of the new Beneteau and Hunter models in San Diego last fall, members utilizing the Long Beach location wondered when some new boats would be placed into the HLYC fleet. Now the wait is finally over! The 31 is a brand new model from Beneteau, and while it is the lead-in to the Beneteau series, it maintains the same dedication as its larger siblings have to creating a performance cruiser par excellence - beautiful to look at, comfortable to live aboard and very seaworthy - making it the perfect vessel for multiple day trips to Catalina!

Members and Guests Participate in 2nd Annual Opening Day Regatta at HIYC

On Saturday, April 5th, 2008, 19 members and guests of HYC competed in our 2nd Annual Opening Day Regatta. What began as a gloomy morning on Harbor Island turned into an afternoon of sunshine and windy conditions perfect for racing. Guests enjoyed lunch and cold drinks on board our brand new 2008 Hunter 31's and Hunter 33's. 4 teams/boats total with captains Tony Igar, Cliff Thompson, Steve Resser, and Paul Thomas set out for an exciting sailboat race out on San Diego Bay. Our winning team on board the Hunter 33 "License to Chill" with captain Tony Igar included HYC members Ken and Mary Rolfes and their guests Richard and Joi Catlin, along with guests Dave Dalke and Jyoti Brouk. Winners received "first place" event t-shirts courtesy of HYC.
